HAMPTON | Hampton Roads Transit's board on Thursday agreed to hire a consultant for $150,000 to find ways to save money in its bus operations.
Transportation Management and Design Inc. is familiar with the local bus system and indicated it could find at least $1 million in savings each year. HRT's stated goal is to squeeze out $3 million in efficiencies. The $3 million target is roughly the equivalent of a 50-cent increase in bus fares, to $2 from $1.50, said Philip Shucet, HRT president and CEO.
