  • BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi soldiers killed 30 suspected insurgents in a furious gunbattle Saturday in downtown Baghdad, authorities said, in what appeared to be the opening salvo of a new plan by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to secure the capital. Al-Maliki announced the new effort to end bloodshed in Baghdad five months after the U.S. military launched Operation Together Forward, a plan to quell sectarian fighting that is widely regarded as a failure. Killings have steadily increased in the capital as insurgents and Shiite militia death squads continue to operate with impunity.

  • The U.S. command in Iraq yesterday spoke of "life coming back to some normalcy" in violence-racked Baghdad, where for weeks, American and Iraqi forces have conducted raids to subdue various insurgent groups and militias that seem bent on instigating a civil war. We are cautiously optimistic and encouraged by all the indicators that we are seeing," Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell told reporters in the Iraqi capital in an assessment of Operation Together Forward. "What we're seeing in these areas is life coming back to some normalcy. We see women and children walking freely in Amiriyah [neighborhood], something that was not seen prior to Operation Together Forward.

  • President Bush's address tonight comes at a pivotal moment in the war in Iraq a critical battleground in the war against Islamofascism. Three-and-a-half years ago, the United States launched a war that was successful in driving Saddam Hussein from power and giving the Iraqi people an historic opportunity to replace a brutal dictatorship with representative democracy. It is clear that continuing to have coalition troops use a "light footprint" to has not worked; and that bringing stability to Baghdad will not occur if U.S. forces repeat the unsuccessful tactics employed between June and O...

Some 75,000 troops - Iraqi and American - will carry out the operation code-named "Going Forward Together," said Gen. Abdelaziz Mohammed Jassem, Iraq's combined-forces operations chief.
