Credit unions, which date back to the early 1900s when they were formed as agriculture cooperatives, have been largely insulated from the present financial exigency by their nature as nonprofit cooperatives and, as a result, goals and management styles that are inherently different from banks and other players in the capital markets. The lack of profit motive in the operation of credit unions, he said, prevented the institutions from driving them toward riskier styles of doing business, such as dealing in CDOs (collateralized debt obligations) and offering subprime loans as securities.

A study is conducted to determine why money is important for the operation of some market economies' most important institutions and to examine some of the conditions required to maintain money as a social operator. A culture-oriented analysis of the social role of money is also performed. Results suggest that both the emergence and the maintenance of the trust in money as a social operator should be understood as a cultural process intrinsic to the structuration of modern market economies.
