Competition between union and nonunion companies has long existed in the construction industry. But with more hands grabbing for fewer contracts, some open-shop firms say the battle has become downright nasty. Nonunion contractors say they are accustomed to unions' claims that the wages they pay are too low. But lately, those contractors say, union representatives' behavior often feels invasive and intimating. Union representatives rebut the allegations, and counter that their actions are completely legal.
Don's Bicycles, a long-time merchant in an Inland Empire city, will open a shop in Redlands. Don's Bicycles of Rialto has leased an 8,000-square-foot store area in the Citrus Village Center on Redlands Boulevard, which is anchored by the Albertsons Market and Rite Aid Drug Store at 700 E. Redlands Blvd.
By early next year, Airport Road should have two new chain "dollar" stores -- in addition to the locally owned Dollar Mart. Deep-discount retailers carrying general merchandise, often with little-known brands and inferior quality merchandise, thrive during economic recessions.

James A. Deccio James Angelo Deccio, 100, of Yakima died Sunday at Landmark Care Center. Mr. Deccio was born in Walla Walla. He was a chef his whole life. He worked for Gasperetti's in Union Gap for several years before moving to Ellensburg to open Coffee Shop #2. When the business was sold, he moved back to Yakima to work at Wardell's Restaurant for 13 years. He was a chef at the Elks Club and retired from the Chalet in 1971. In 1962, while working at the Chalet, he began making Deccio's Seasonings. He and his wife started the Deccio's Seasonings business in 1971 and retired in 1995 when the business sold.
The age-old stereotype that cops love donuts is true. That's according to three New Orleans police officers who will open a shop in Mid City to sell the sweet pastries and other baked goods. NOPD officers Dennis Gibliant, Ronnie Laporte and Brandon Singleton are launching Blue Dot Donuts at 4301 Canal St. at 7 a.m. April 1. The store will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, Gibliant said.
The franchise owners of a new Venice Olive Oil store expect to open their shop at 109 N. Tejon St. on Memorial Day. Matt Carpenter and Molly Martyn moved from South Denver to live and work in downtown Colorado Springs. They bought into the Venice Olive Oil franchise and are opening the brand's first store outside of its home state of Florida.
