The south side's Kinnickinnic River has been called Milwaukee's "forgotten river." Not today: This week, a national organization brought attention to the KK when it listed the river as one of the country's 10 most endangered. And today, volunteers from throughout the area will walk its banks, doing what they can to clean up the river in an event sponsored by the Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers and the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center. The Kinnickinnic, narrow and shallow for most of its run, has not been as popular or as productive as its big brothers to the north, the Milwaukee and Menomonee. Nevertheless, it has a special place in the hearts of most south siders, especially those who remember the river before it was given a cement bottom and banks in the 1960s.
