Portland officials say that two competing offers to redevelop the Maine State Pier would wind up generating similar annual payments in rent and property taxes, despite an initial evaluation showing a substantial difference between the proposals. According to figures presented Wednesday, the city would get about $700,000 more in annual property taxes and rent if it leased the Maine State Pier to The Olympia Cos. rather than Ocean Properties Ltd.

Two Bangor natives are vying for the chance to redevelop and revive the Portland waterfront - a project the city is calling one of the largest in its history. Kevin Mahaney, 45, president and chief executive officer of The Olympia Companies, and Tom Walsh, 79, chairman and founder of Ocean Properties Ltd., have put forth competing proposals for an extensive redevelopment of the Maine State Pier in Portland.
