It's like frying chicken without grease when the stylists curl hair and they don't moisturize it. They're not learning the basics of using shea butter and olive oil to deep condition the hair for healthiness," [Isaiah Dent] said.
"A lot of salons are sending money out the door by not selling the products they are using," she said. [Stephanie Blackman], who's done everything from managing a Super Cuts to working a mom and pop salon, said ethnic salons often don't sell products and it's something teachers need to begin to focus on.
Dent believes this is where his motto comes in. "Hair is hair," he said, "It's all about the tools you have to use to achieve a certain look.

Home alone for the evening, I decided to replicate a meal my mom used to make.
So I cooked up some angel hair pasta, tossed it with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled it with freshly grated parmigiano reggiano. I added a small salad with hearts of romaine, warm chevre and a drizzle of truffled olive oil, accompanied by a glass of pinot grigio.

Stephanie Kartalopoulos grew up eating meals with a family that enjoyed sitting down to dinner together. So when she went off to college more than a decade ago, one of her biggest adjustments was learning how to cook for one. At first she found it difficult because she missed the pleasure of cooking with her family, celebrating the food, drink and the lively family conversation. In time, she learned to shop, cook and store food for one -- as millions of other Americans do -- and to actually enjoy it.
Now back in school at 32, the single doctoral student at the University of Missouri has also adjusted to solo cooking on a tighter budget.

For a summer picnic or backyard cookout, there is no better side salad than a homemade slaw.
Made from hearty ingredients like shredded cabbage, carrots or even broccoli stems, slaws stay crisp and delicious in the heat of summer. Salads made with tender mixed greens or even crunchy romaine wilt within moments of being put out on the picnic table.

Q I have an adult "rag-doll" kitty. As you know there is much hair/fur. I have given him hairball med occasionally, also pumpkin, as I learned from your past columns. Recently, I have been giving him a small amount of olive oil. My question: Is it all right for him to have olive oil? I manage to groom him daily as well.
A A small amount of olive oil will not hurt your cat, but it won't do much to speed hairballs along his gut. Mineral oil (which is inert) works well if your cat will take it. Do not give more than a half to one teaspoonful twice a week or he will leak some of the oil, distressing to you and your cat. There are also proprietary preparations available from pet stores that are supposed to help in control of hairballs. Some owners have resorted to putting a small amoun...

With that spirit in mind, the store will celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., offering a free tasting of sparkling rose wines, free massages by Liz Branch Hair Salon & Day Spa, which is a few doors away at 1775 Madison Avenue, a sampling of sweets from the Dessert Diva, and grab-bag goodies from L'Oreal. All mothers are welcomed, and dads, too.
Dean's expertise shows in the judicious wines for sale, obviously selected with the notion that you don't have to break the bank to enjoy good wine, for prices range from $6.99 to $14.99 for midrange wines. For example, the other day I spotted favorite chardonnay wines from California by J. Lohr, Concannon, Deloach, and Mondavi, as well as heady, more expensive bottles from Ramey.

Carrot Confit, Bocca This spring, Chris D'Ambro was the chef at Bocca, a restolounge as oily as Snooki's hair with food far better than I expected. His carrots, confit-ed and carved into whimsical shapes, featured both powder .(fruity olive oil) and foam (hibiscus) - but those tricks weren't what made this plate ' impressive. It had the vivaciousness of a 24-year-old but the balance of flavors you'd expect from an older chef. The tart hibiscus bubbles and funky fermented garlic lent the sweet carrots and pureed English peas a welcome gravity, while the playful composition- baby beet greens leapfrogging through the donut-cut carrots-showed D'Ambro's sense of humor. Hope he's the one laughing now.
