PROVO -- Utah County Democrats will honor a former Republican governor on May 22 whey they give Olene Walker the organization's first distinguished service award.
The point, said Utah County Democratic Party Chairman Richard Davis, is to recognize a moderate politician who worked with both of Utah's major political parties.

Olene Walker, Utah's first female governor, was recognized Wednesday for her service, energy and civic involvement -- receiving the 2005 "Distinguished Utahn Award.
The honor is given annually by the Salt Lake and Utah Valley chapters of the Brigham Young University Management Society.

The University of Utah College of Education will host "A Legacy of Learning -- A Tribute to Olene Walker: 'The Governor Who Makes Us Read.' " at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
