MUNICH - It's a wedding party that got out of control: Two hundred years ago, Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig celebrated his royal nuptials with a big public bash that was such a hit it became an annual event - and came to be known worldwide as "The Oktoberfest. His bride, Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghusen, gave her name to the Theresienwiese festival grounds upon which the event welcomes more than 6 million people a year for towering mugs of beer, oompah music and bright traditional costumes.

The spacious landscapes, crisp skies and rugged natural beauty north of Taos invite the mind to relax and the spirit to expand. And the quirky little villages along the Hondo Mesa contain just enough pockets of activity to satisfy cultural curiosity. Keep your eyes wide open -- the scenic roads tend to be just as awe-inspiring as the destinations. Heading north from Taos, past the village of El Prado, you'll come to the intersection of State Roads 522 and 150, also known as "The old blinking light." Continue north on 522 and the landscape unfurls before you. When the shoulder is wide enough, you can pull over for photos or a few moments of communion with the rolling sagebrush and mountain views.

Red River is a lively Western town at an elevation of 8,750 feet in the heart of the Sangre de Cristos on the northern loop of the Enchanted Circle, State Road 38. It was originally established as a mining town in the late 1800s. In their hey-day, local mines produced high-grade copper, silver and gold. But the ore ran out by the 1920s and then Red River became a popular tourist destination, especially for Texans who wanted to escape the summer heat. Most of the buildings are constructed of rough pine to preserve that rustic look, and plank sidewalks remind you of the old days when the point was to avoid the mud.

More than 37 years ago, a group of 17- and 18-year-old guys decided they wanted more out of life than just sports, hanging out and getting into trouble. They had their share of fun, but wanted more. One evening after a weekly baseball game at the 6th Street hill in Brooklyn Park, they met at their usual gathering spot at the Cedar Room Club Bar on Ritchie Highway. This group of young men established "The Cedar Room Club" and in the last 37 years has done much to give back to the community.
