I always thought it odd that Oktoberfest starts in September, but after visiting the world-famous festival and its host city of Munich a few years ago, I understand why the Germans just couldn't wait another month for the party to begin.
Billed as the largest public festival in the world, Oktoberfest 2008 kicks off Sept. 20 with the Grand Entry of the Oktoberfest Landlords and Breweries, a 1,000-person parade featuring decorated floats, beer maidens and traditional brass bands. At noon the Lord Mayor will tap the first barrel of beer, and by the end of the 16- day festival 6 million revelers will guzzle almost 2 million gallons of Bavaria's best brew.

Both Spaten Oktoberfest Ur-Marzen and Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen Amber are the real deal and will be poured in the beer tents in Munich. The Spaten is exceptionally smooth and well balanced with a nice citrus zing playing against the racy matt. It's soft on hops, giving just the slightest bite to this appealing brew. Spicy matt and a light hit of hop aromatics mark the Paulaner. There's not a hint of bitterness from those hops, but they do have a drying influence that helps to balance the sweet malt. A nice round finish with lightly toasted grain adds texture and flavor to make this one worthy.

It's October and time for Oktoberfest, the celebration of beer for folks worldwide and in Germany, a country that arguably makes the best beer in the world. But maybe those Germans should taste some of the beers being made right here in the Mid-South.
About one Saturday a month, Three Dudes Brewing - Ben Pugh, Kris Fowler and Matt Danielson, three friends and fellow auto mechanics - fires up its propane burners and brews beer in Cordova.

Spaten's Oktoberfest is a perfectly balanced amber. They actually claim they brewed the original "marzen beer." This "big 6" Munich brewery is taking lead sponsorship at Philly's Oktoberfest on September 27th at the Armory on 23rd St. If Festgoers in Munich drink 14,668,099 pints and consume 284,506 pork sausages, we've got our "work" cut out for us. Buy tickets at www.phillybeerfests.com. $2.35
This is one of the lighter German Oktoberfests. It's more of a Helles. People often ask me, "What the hell is a Helles?" Here you go: It's a medium-bodied golden lager with a great bready nose and German Noble Hops. A pint or two or three of heaven. $4.60 (16.9 oz)
