  • Former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys' real estate investment company recently purchased a parcel for $225,000 that Humphreys deeded to a nonprofit organization 22 years ago when he valued it at $615,000, public records show. The property near SW 23rd Street and Meridian Avenue, which is sandwiched between two other parcels that are held by Humphreys family investment groups, has been exempt from taxes in the interim, county officials said. Without that status, the property's tax bill would have been from an estimated $50,000 to $150,000 over two decades.

  • Leave it to Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Bob Anthony to stir things up among some Republican Party leaders, and Democrats too by indicating he is strongly considering a race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination this year. It would pit him against former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys in the primary election. If the 55-year-old commissioner decides to run for the seat being vacated by Republican Don Nickles, Oklahoma's two top vote-getters of all time again could be on the same general election ballot next November.

  • Political polls and politicians' campaign ads may be among the most misleading material we receive during this political season. That is of particular interest during the primary election campaign for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Don Nickles. A statewide poll commissioned by Republican U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook, from among 500 5th District voters, indicates former 2nd District U.S. Rep. Tom Coburn had a narrow 2-point lead over Democrat U.S. Rep. Brad Carson, who now represents the 2nd District, but the poll margin of error was 4.2 points. Carson leads the other two Republicans by 5 points over Corporation Commissioner Bob Anthony, and 7 points over former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys. It is a narrow margin but could indicate Coburn has the best chance of defeati...

  • COMMANDER'S CLAIM: [Tim Russert]'s question about [John Kerry]'s war records was prompted by a story in the Boston Globe in which Kerry's commanding officer in Vietnam, Lieutenant Commander Grant Hibbard, raised doubts about Kerry's first Purple Heart. "He had a little scratch on his forearm, and he was holding a piece of shrapnel," Hibbard told the Globe. "People in the office were saying, 'I don't think we got any fire,' and there is a guy holding a...

  • The time is ripe for reform of Oklahoma County government, and many options are on the table for discussion. Last week the Leadership Oklahoma City Alumni Association hosted a discussion that featured a panel of city and county leaders, including County Commissioner Jim Roth, County Treasurer Butch Freeman and former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys. There was candid talk about the dissolution of the county budget board. All three panelists agreed the change was not a good one for the citizens of Oklahoma County and discussed some viable choices.

  • One of the early documents Kirk Humphreys received after becoming mayor of Oklahoma City in 1998 was a study from an international land planning group on how to revitalize Broadway Avenue. The study was completed after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

  • Three business and civic leaders will be honored for their contributions to downtown May 19 at the 20th annual Dean A. McGee Award Ceremony. They are former Oklahoma City mayor and president of Gibralter Investments, Kirk Humphreys; Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum executive director, Kari Watkins; and Laura Warriner, director of Untitled [ArtSpace]. The black-tie dinner will be in the Meinders Hall of Mirrors in Civic Center Music Hall. The evening will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the award presentations at 7 p.m.

  • Steve Kime was listening carefully to speakers at the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber's State of the Schools luncheon. Speakers at the luncheon included Burns Hargis, president of Oklahoma State University, Larry Nichols, chairman and CEO of Devon Energy, and Kirk Humphreys, board chairman of the Oklahoma City Public Schools and former Oklahoma City mayor.

  • A steering committee charged with planning the future of the area near downtown, which will be affected when Interstate 40 is moved, were told on Thursday what makes a great city. Now it will be their turn to try to make Oklahoma City one of those great cities by helping to plan the development of 590 out of 1,375 acres over the next few decades. We only get one chance to do this right," said former Oklahoma City mayor and Core to Shore committee member Kirk Humphreys.
