HOULTON While the municipality's 2010 annual audit showed no financial irregularities, it did reveal that the town's surplus account has shrunken significantly in the past year. Officially called the undesignated fund account, surplus money has been used to offset taxation and lower or maintain the mill rate. It also has helped the town deal with unexpected costs.

NEW SHARON ? Selectmen were able to hold the tax rate at $12.50 per $1,000 of property valuation for 2010, Board of Selectmen Chairman Maynard Webster said Monday. The rate represents spending nearly $40,000 less this year on town government operations than last year, and using $40,000 from the town's surplus account to offset the rate, he said.

JAY -- There will be no special town meeting to vote on how school funds are used because it's too late and it's not necessary, the School Department attorney advised this week. Voters were to decide this month if they wanted the School Department to use the $216,000, which they approved moving from the town undesignated revenue account to the school general fund last year, to offset the penalty assessed for not complying with the state's school consolidation law.
