Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday that he and his wife, Cheri, would move into the official governor's residence once major renovations on the home are completed next year. Daniels had his weekly media availability in the three-story house, which is mostly gutted as workers continue a major overhaul that includes new plumbing, wiring, heating and cooling systems and other renovations.
In an unprecedented move, Chancellor Carlos Santiago is moving from the official residence that comes with the top post at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and into one of Milwaukee's priciest condominium buildings. Santiago said in an interview Thursday that he and his wife, a professor at UWM, had purchased a condo in Kilbourn Tower, where the average unit costs $900,000. He said they would move in after commencement.
In the afternoon, in the Garden at Schloss Meseberg, the President had lunch with Chancellor [Angela Merkel]. Later, he traveled to Rome, Italy. He then traveled to the Villa Taverna, the official residence of U.S. Ambassador to Italy Ronald P. Spogli.
The United States is "gravely concerned" about the widespread violence in Libya, as reports Sunday said the country's second- largest city, Benghazi, was in the hands of rebel soldiers and anti- government protesters who had occupied the official residence of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. In Benghazi and in the coastal areas, we are very concerned about reports of security forces firing on peaceful protesters," said U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan E. Rice.
