  • MORGANTOWN - Jeff Mullen's recollection of spring football at West Virginia this past April is pretty vivid and pretty unusual. We had limited success for the first time in three years," the offensive coordinator said. "That fired us up a little bit.

  • USC lost to No. 1- ranked Oregon by 21points, but one play from that game raised questions about the Trojans' offense and whether it will be hindered during the final five games of the season. The play occurred in the second quarter with the Trojans leading 17-15 and full of momentum. Quarterback Matt Barkley lined up in the shotgun formation and called the signals. Coach Lane Kiffin then whistled from the sideline to get Barkley's attention. Barkley looked toward Kiffin and center Kris O'Dowd thought Barkley signaled for the snap.

  • HUNTINGTON - In a span of three plays at the end of Marshall's Green-White Game Saturday, all the reasons for optimism and pessimism came flowing forth in dramatic fashion. The White side, up 24-8 and driving after recovering an onside kick, drove for another touchdown on the legs of Martin Ward. He almost scored on third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, and quarterback Brian Anderson tried a quick-snap sneak on fourth-and- inches. The Green defense stonewalled Anderson with a strong line surge.

  • Taft High's football team is known for its speed, but Alemany was faster on Friday, taking advantage of several long breakaways in a 36-26 nonleague victory over the visiting Toreadors. The key was a 58-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Jerico Richardson in the fourth quarter to give Alemany a 30-20 lead. The Warriors also scored a 66-yard pass from Vernon Adams to Kyron DeFour, and earlier Adams' 52-yard run set up his 5-yard touchdown pass to Shane Drozdowski.

  • EAST RUTHERFORD - Justin Tuck and Brandon Jacobs represent so much than can be different in a football-playing personality. One plays defense, the other offense. One is relatively quiet and dignified, the other loud and brash. One is assured of his Giants' future, the other might be playing his last game in a Giants uniform. Yet of all the voices clattering and clamoring throughout the weeklong buildup to the Giants' winner-take-all regular-season finale tonight against the Cowboys, of all the reasons the Giants are in this win-and-in-the-playoffs scenario at MetLife Stadium, Tuck and Jacobs rose above the noise. By rediscovering the old, dominant football versions of themselves, they helped the Giants rediscover a path to the postseason.

  • OXFORD, Miss. - Put the magnifying glass on Ole Miss' wheezing, woeful offense that ranks 115th among the 120 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision football programs. Pore through play-by-plays of their three games en route to a 1- 2 start, taking a close look at the losses to BCS teams Brigham Young and Vanderbilt.

  • With big plays produced by a newly installed offense at a premium, Franklin County's football team needed another means of getting some excitement revved up against visiting William Fleming. Just as soon as the Colonels became the first of the two teams to record a score when Daveon Fitzgerald belted a 26-yard second- quarter field goal, the Eagles came to life on the next play.

  • By Chip Malafronte Register Staff cmalafronte@nhregister.com STORRS -- Six games into the season -- the schedule half finished -- the UConn football team has proven itself to be inconsistent of offense and prone to allowing huge plays on defense.

  • BIG PLAYS ON OFFENSE B+ The Cavaliers had five plays of 20 yards or more, which was five more than the previous week, and scored the winning touchdown on a 27-yard pass.

  • LOGAN -- Utah State football situational scrimmage at Romney Stadium showed signs of improvement from Monday's scrimmage and Aggie coach Gary Andersen was pleased with the progress. The defense played much better. We had better emotion with the first two groups. They tackled much better," Andersen said. "We ran to the football well and the offense made some plays as well. It was a much more competitive scrimmage. It is what you would look at and say, 'That is Division I football.'
