The Kearney boys basketball team wanted two things this season: a state championship and a rematch with Borgia. With an offense driven by Dillon Starzl and defense inspired by Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim, the Bulldogs got both at Mizzou Arena last night. Down by seven at halftime, Kearney used size and scheme to charge back in the third quarter, avenging its loss to Borgia in last year's title game with a 47-43 victory against the previously undefeated Knights. Boasting a combined 18-inch height advantage among the game's starters, the Bulldogs dominated the interior throughout the game. Starzl, a 6-foot-9 senior, was the star with a game-high 20 points, but it was the team's length and deployment of a 2-3 zone defense that was the difference, Kearney Coach Gary Belcher said.

The South River boys basketball team consistently frustrated Meade last night. The Seahawks, playing mostly a triangle-and-two with an individual locked onto both of Meade's top scorers, Johann Jones and Mandel Brown, slowed up Meade's offense.
