Just as cats can look at kings, I can try to evaluate Paul Samuelson's achievements over a 90-year lifetime. The remainder of this essay has two substantive parts. The first describes the importance attached to the 1947 Foundations -- what it did in a positive sort of way, what it clearly omitted, and, given a reference to Richard Goodwin, just why. The second takes up Samuelson's work from my favorite standpoint -- identifying his authority systems and from where they seemingly derived.
