Ten years in the world of pop music can be a lifetime. Just ask Britney Spears. In 2000, CDs were still selling, Facebook and MySpace were in their infancy, and Auto Tune was something producers only occasionally applied to a vocal performance.
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter after a trial that painted him as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed the pop star. The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture's most shocking tragedies - the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer's heavily promoted comeback concerts.
On , Banner finally forgoes ignorant trunk rattlers to focus solely on poignant, politically loaded raps. Something about 9th Wonder's airy soul beats finally broke the poppy, pandering side of Banner's persona, it seems. Even the album's intro, "Diamonds On My Pinky," runs thick with dead-eyed one-liners ("I'm from Mississippi where you let your nuts hang/ Where the white folks let my ancestors do the same") and frightening confessions ("1 tried suicide but the gun wasn't workin"). "Strange," featuring Winston-Salem's Big Remo, strings a laundry list of sociopolitical absurdities. The courtship raps of "Be With You" (featuring Ludacris) and the self-deprecating loverman track "Stutter" correct the dopey strip club come-ons of "Like a Pimp.
[McCartney] took exception to the King of Pop's use of Beatles songs in commercials. Many thought that Paul spoke representatively for the Fab Four in voicing his objection, and Beatles fans the world over thought commercial use of Fab Four songs sacrilege! How would [Michael Joseph Jackson] respond to Paul's umbrage? "If he didn't want to invest $47.5 million in his own songs," The King of Pop is reported to have said, "then he shouldn't come crying to me now." Say, say, say! And just think, I was told by a "reputable" source that Michael had willed the Beatles' catalogue back Paul, and boldly printed this erroneous information right here in this column. But, as if to scold me from the grave, my friend and brother, Michael Jackson, is quoted as saying way back in 2001: "I want to clari...
King Michael: Tribute to the King of Pop" happens Saturday, June 26 at 8 p.m. and features three talented artists, Michael Firestone, Pete Carter and Ivan Kelley, aka Lil Man, who will portray Michael at different stages of his amazing career, mastering his unique dancing to perform such hits as "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Thriller," "Smooth Criminal and "Earth Song. This groundbreaking series, running every Friday through Monday in June, features many of Black theater's most popular and poignant dramas. Many of the plays, presented at the Castillo Theatre and the National Black Theatre, have gone on to acclaimed success on other stages and won numerous awards. Two Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, "Topdog/UnderDog" (2002), an allegory by Suzan Lori Parks about competing brothers, and "No ...
Lady Gaga brings performs Sunday at Consol Energy Center. Three years ago, few people outside of the New York's Lower East Side club scene had heard of Lady Gaga. Today, she's a pop culture force. She's had two No. 1 hits ("Just Dance" and "Poker Face") and several more in the Top 10. Her music is everywhere, even being parodied by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her outlandish style of dress is starting to be copied by young girls, reckoning back to the age of Madonna. Her songs have been featured on a full episode of another pop culture phenomenon, "Glee." Just last week, she surpassed Britney Spears as the most followed person on Twitter. And she's in the middle of the largely sold-out "Monster Ball" tour, which makes a stop Sunday at the Consol Energy Center. Here's a look at some...
We bought the debut album Hot Fuss and discovered that, unlike most records these days, it actually had other hits. "Smile Like You Mean It" is Duran Duran's "Reflex" for a new generation. The Grammy-nominated "Mr. Brightside"despite lyrics that conceivably could've been written by Dana Carvey à la "Choppin' Broccoli"-sank its pop talons into us. "All These Things That I've Done" isn't half bad either. The rest of the record is pure garbage, but it mattered little-we were already midway through a blissed out, full-on nod of aural opiate. Hot Fuss eventually logged 94 weeks on the Billboard charts, 53 of which were inside the Top 50. Speaking of lyrics, [Beck] has taken a respectable approach to them over the years, namely, that we'd always be intrigued enough to wonder just what in God'...
Even I, as someone who religiously follows music trends and styles, have a hard time keeping the hundreds of genre names that are out there in order. For instance, I feel like Im safe in calling a band such as Orono five-piece These October Skies post-hardcore hardcore punk, but evolved from hardcores strict rhythms and two- minute song lengths, with longer songs and more experimental musical structure. But then I realize that not everyone knows what the term post- hardcore means and not everyone knows what hardcore itself really means. So I do what These October Skies guitarist Kory Boulier does when folks come into the hardware store he works at in Hampden and inquire about his band.
(Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Tim. 3:1, 2; Titus 1:5, 7) A number of elders among Jehovah's Witnesses, the religion Michael Jackson claimed till his dying day, felt the need to protect the faithful from the King of Pop; for, enigmatically, they saw him as a spiritual threat. [...] for the sake of spiritual solidarity, the elder minority capitulated and gave in to the majority.
NEW YORK - Whether it's being encased in an egg or wearing slabs of meat, there's never a question of whether Lady Gaga will make a spectacle of herself at an awards show - the question is just what kind. So when the MTV Video Music Awards came around this year, Gaga didn't disappoint. Though she dressed somewhat conservatively in short black hair, a dingy white t-shirt, a black blazer and pants, it was whom she embodied that made headlines - a man, whom she called Jo Calderone. The temporary gender switch marked yet another act in Gaga's strange pop odyssey.
