MUSCATINE, Iowa, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- As we approach the 40th anniversary of Earth Day this month, more people than ever are trying to live "green." This consumer behavior is impacting many industries, including the pet industry, with pet owners extending their eco-consciousness to food, toys and other products for their pets. With 93.6 million household cats in the U.S. alone, eco- conscious cat owners are seeking earth-friendly cat litter to reduce the huge volumes of "earth-unfriendly" litter - containing clay and artificial ingredients - that go to the landfills each year.

Homeowners and parents spent months fighting with landfill owner Republic Services of Arizona and pushing state and federal officials to take action against it. The owner put a synthetic covering on uncapped areas of the landfill and extended its gas-extraction system, completing a state-ordered odor-elimination project, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced.

When Portland enacted an odor-control ordinance in 1997, incredulous locals snickered and national media weighed in.
The city had rallied a contingent of specially trained "sniffers," armed with small bottles of the chemical butanol, to crack down on "emitters" of offensive smells.

It was an irresistible bit of ironic ammunition for the opponents of pork barrel projects. An earmark in the Congressional spending bill designated $1.7 million to study, of all things, pig odor. For those who rail against wasteful government spending, it was a Christmas ham tied with a bacon bow.
It's also a pretty good example of how pork lies in the eye of the beholder. Here in Iowa, where pigs outnumber people more than five to one, pig odor is no joke. With the proliferation of huge factory farms, odor has become an environmental and quality of life issue in rural Iowa. If scientists can figure out a way to diminish the odor from manure, it would go along way toward peaceful coexistence between big farms and small towns. Iowa has plenty of both.
