Wayne Justice presented the Coast Guard Medal to Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Buchanan and a Coast Guard Commendation Medal to Petty Officer 2nd Class Steven Atkinson in a ceremony Friday. Petty Officer 3rd Class John Ryan also will receive the Coast Guard Medal, and Seaman Dakota Dethloff will receive a Coast Guard Commendation Medal.

  • GUBERNATORIAL rivals Joe Manchin and Monty Warner put partisan politics aside to attend memorial services for Warner's brother, Buffy Warner, in Ocracoke Island, N.C., last week. Manchin, Warner and Senate Majority Leader Truman Chafin, D- Mingo, flew to the service on Charleston lawyer Jim Humphreys' King Air 200.

  • The lone survivor of the July Fourth fireworks explosion that killed four people on Ocracoke Island, N.C., has told investigators that the crew pushed electric igniters into the fireworks while inside the truck and they exploded. // The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released its report in response to The Virginian-Pilot's request for information. Although the report does not name him, Martez Holland, the 27- year-old Goldsboro, N.C., resident who escaped the truck from the rear door, gave detailed accounts.

  • OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. - North Carolina authorities have confirmed that the death of former West Virginia state Sen. George Blackburn "Buffy" Warner Jr. was the result of an accidental fall aboard his yacht. Warner, the brother of Republican gubernatorial nominee Monty Warner, state GOP Chairman Kris Warner and U.S. Attorney Kasey Warner, was found dead by employees of his pub Friday morning after he couldn't be reached by phone or radio. He was 53.

  • NORFOLK - Larry Pierce Williams, born Jan. 14, 1930 of Ocracoke Island, N.C., and Norfolk, passed away April 8, 2009. A memorial service will be held for Larry Williams at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Interment will be private and held at the Howard-Wahab Family Cemetery. Friends are invited to the Wahab House after the service to share memories and celebrate Larry William's life.

Thousands of tourists stranded on this barrier island with no electricity and running water were told Wednesday to evacuate to give residents a chance to make repairs and clean up after the glancing blow struck by Hurricane Alex and its 100 mph wind. Alex was stronger than expected when it grazed North Carolina's Outer Banks on Tuesday, blacking out thousands of customers and sending trash bins and debris floating along flooded roads. Ocracoke Island, south of Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks chain of low- lying barrier islands, bore the brunt of Alex's rain and heavy wind.
