WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration today awarded $2.75 million in Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training Grants to 16 organizations, including nonprofit and community/faith- based groups, employer associations, labor unions, joint labor/ management associations, and colleges and universities.
These grants will assist organizations in providing safety and health training, and educational programs for workers and employers. The $2.75 million is in addition to the $8 million OSHA awarded Sept. 9 to 45 organizations for the Susan Harwood Capacity Building Grants.

A grant given to West Virginia University from the Environmental Protection Agency funded the local implementation of additional Occupational and Safety and Health Administration safety training, Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials response training, and asbestos removal and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certifications. Several area businesses donate their time and other resources to help train the women, whether through the offering of job site field trips, on-site work training or volunteering to help the students hone their interview skills, Pletcher said.
