  • It's almost a sign of desperation that [Michael Bloomberg] feels compelled to keep throwing money at this problem," Democratic Comptroller candidate John Liu told the Amsterdam News. "The problem being that his numbers are going nowhere and now there's only an 8 point spread between Thompson and Bloomberg. New Yorkers are definitely getting it that Thompson wants to be mayor, not emperor, and New York wants a mayor to lead our city, not an impetuous emperor who just throws money at the problem. "Fortunately for us, he's spent $64.8 million, but his ratings in the polls haven't gone up so much," said [Charles Barron]. "He is ripe to be beaten and BiDy Thompson is gaining momentum." Perhaps Thompson's momentum could be the reason for Bloombergs camp mailing New Yorkers antiThompson lite...

  • While gathering information from the newspaper and some public meetings, I offer several thoughts. First, I have nothing but respect for the RSU 16 school board members from Mechanic Falls. Several are personal friends. With that being said, the tax increase proposed in this year's budget is obscene, at best.

  • NORMAL - Rich Whitney, the Green Party candidate for Illinois governor, calls a Chicago public television station's decision to lock him out of today's debate "downright obscene. Speaking at a forum Wednesday at Illinois State University, Whitney urged Illinois voters to join in his outrage and flood WTTW- TV with calls ande-mails demanding his inclusion.

  • IT'S so deceptive for politicians to stress "entitlements," when they talk about gutting Social Security and Medicare, programs long paid for by their beneficiaries. The Republicans make it sound as if they're doing us a favor by seeking to strangle America's two most successful domestic programs. And now, President Barack Obama seems poised to join their camp in undermining the essential lifeline for most of the nation's seniors, many of whom lost their retirement savings in the banking meltdown. These programs are not government handouts to a privileged class, such as defense contractors and bankers. On the contrary, Social Security and Medicare have been funded by a regressive tax, which falls disproportionately on middle-class earners, while caps in the system leave the wealthy larg...

  • Election time is at long last over. What bothers me more than the mud-slinging and endless commercials is the huge amounts of money spent by the candidates to try to get elected. Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent in California alone! Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? All I can think about is how much good the money could do in so many areas: schools, infrastructure, fixing our massive budget mess, helping the homeless (especially children) and the list could go on and on. Meg Whitman alone spent well over $140 million of her own money in a losing effort. I received countless circulars (done on the best paper, using the best graphics, which is very expensive). Most of them never made it into my home. They went straight into the recycle trash can.

  • Rep. Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat, has been embroiled in a scandal since a close-up photo of a man's crotch was sent from his Twitter account to a female college student last weekend. Mr. Weiner denies sending the photo, but he cannot say with "certitude" whether the image was of his own private parts. His story isn't adding up. Mr. Weiner has been careful to point out that his Twitter account is private, but his spokesman did not respond to questions from The Washington Times about whether the congressman was on his government- issued BlackBerry when the photo was sent via Twitter. The congressman only told reporters that he was "tweeting at the time" that he was supposedly hacked. If he was using his work BlackBerry, the normal protocol for a security breach would be to report it...
