FORT LEE - In a historic event, with her family at her side, local fixture of the military community Brig. Gen. Gwen Bingham took the oath of office during a promotion ceremony in front of an audience of at the Lee Club on Friday. In taking the oath, Bingham became the first ever female quartermaster general of the Army, and the 51st person to hold that title.
Air Force Second Lt. Patrick D. O'Dell was among 55 ROTC cadets, representing all military services from colleges and universities nationwide, who were administered the oath of office by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates during a special White House ceremony attended by President Bush. O'Dell was commissioned a second lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. O'Dell will be assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he will begin Euro-NATO joint jet pilot training this fall. His parents are Russell and Christine O'Dell of Collierville.
