Prager made the manifestly obvious point that the first Muslim congressman, Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, should take his oath of office not on a Koran, but on a Bible, in recognition of "the value system [that] underlies American civilization." [...] yet the ADL viciously attacks conservatives, implying that there is some genetic anti-Semitism among right-wingers in order to hide the fact that anti-Semites are the ADL's best friends: the defeatists in Congress, the people who tried to drive Joe Lieberman from office, the hoodlums on college campuses who riot at any criticism of Muslim terrorists and identify Israel as an imperialist aggressor, and liberal college faculties calling for "anti-apartheid" boycotts of Israel.

Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, will take his oath of office on the Koran, not the Bible.
Although some have criticized the Minnesota Democrat's decision, his campaign manager cites historical precedent in describing it as a nonissue.

Rep. Keith Ellison, who became the first Muslim in Congress yesterday, said he was proud to take a ceremonial oath of office using the Koran once owned by Thomas Jefferson a plan that had triggered criticism.
The very foundation of our nation, the authors of our Constitution impressed, is religious freedom, and the use of Jefferson's Koran shows that the founders not only knew of the Koran but also used it," said the Minnesota Democrat, who used the historic volume during a ceremonial swearing-in of the Congressional Black Caucus.

An Illinois Democrat yesterday called on Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. to meet with Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, whom the Virginia Republican criticized for his intention to take the oath of office using the Koran rather than the Bible.
If he meets with Keith, he'll see what I saw: a good American with good values of a different faith who's trying to do right by the people he represents," Rep. Rahm Emanuel, who is Jewish, said of Mr. Ellison, Minnesota Democrat, who is the first Muslim elected to Congress.

America's Muslim voters are a young, highly educated and prosperous voting bloc that will overwhelmingly back Democrats in November, according to a survey released yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
They are also coming of age in terms of political representation. Next month, Democratic nominee Keith Ellison of Minneapolis is poised to become the first Muslim member of the House of Representatives. He says, if elected, he will take his oath of office with his hand on the Koran instead of the Bible.

It's a cartoon ... and that's why we've got the First Amendment," Obama told CNN. "And I think the American people are probably spending a little more time worrying about what's happening with the banking system and the housing market and what's happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, than a cartoon. So I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it.
"[W]on't some leaders see this attention-grabbing device as a slur against Obama?" Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz wrote in his Monday column. "There is no editor's note," and the cover art has "nothing to do with the accompanying article."
