My resignation was not the result of me being unhappy with him (the mayor), budget constraints or any of bis policies," [Terry Mason] told the Defender. "I am leaving because a great opportunity has become available. This was an incredible opportunity I could not pass up.
"My preference is that someone of color replaces me," he said. "But we first have to make sure the person is appropriate."

This rule establishes air quality designations for all areas in the United States for the 2010 Primary Nitrogen Dioxide (NO<INF>2</INF>) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Based on air quality monitoring data, the EPA is issuing this rule to designate all areas of the country as ``unclassifiable/attainment'' for the 2010 NO<INF>2</INF> NAAQS. The EPA is designating areas as ``unclassifiable/attainment'' to mean that available information does not indicate that the air quality in these areas exceeds the 2010 NO<INF>2</INF> NAAQS.

County gets OK to close hospital JOLIET, Ill. -- A state board agreed Tuesday to allow Cook County to close a south suburban Chicago hospital where nine long-term care patients remain and turn the facility into a regional outpatient center. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved, 7-1, closing Oak Forest Hospital at meeting in Joliet marked by emotional protest from hospital supporters. The vote included a condition requesting county officials to return in one year to update the board on the implementation of their conversion plan. The board also wants to know if the county has difficulty getting other local hospitals to take former Oak Forest patients. The county plans to transfer the last nine patients out of the hospital by Sept. 1. The conversion is expe...

CHICAGO - Two charity hospitals in Illinois are facing a life-or- death decision. There's not much left of either of them - one in Chicago's south suburbs, the other in impoverished East St. Louis - aside from emergency rooms crowded with patients seeking free care. Now they would like the state's permission to shut down.
The institutions, which have served low-income people in the state for more than 100 years, represent a significant development that's gone largely unnoticed as the nation climbs out of the recession. Many charity hospitals, already struggling with rising costs, are on the brink of failure because of looming budget cuts, increasing numbers of uninsured patients and a slow economic recovery.
