NOTE: Online video; Dancers rehearse at newhavenregister.com Last year at this time, Jared Redick, the artistic director of the New Haven Ballet, sat in the audience taking copious notes as he watched his dancers perform "The Nutcracker.
Artistic director Terrence Orr has been busy tweaking his annual production of "The Nutcracker," which Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has been performing since he produced and designed it in 2002. He took the classic tale of "The Nutcracker," the story of a young girl, named Marie in this version, who is on the brink of adulthood. At a grand party with lots of guests on Christmas Eve, she receives a Nutcracker as a special gift from her uncle or in some versions her godfather.
Although the ubiquity of "The Nutcracker" at Christmas makes it hard to believe, the ballet was neglected for more than a half century after it first was performed in 1891. It really caught on in the United States in the 1950s, and is the most frequently performed ballet in this country.
Is there anyone who has not seen "The Nutcracker?" Incredibly, yes there is, and I am married to him. It took the charms of a fellow ballet dancer and the help from some popular TV shows to inspire him. He wanted to be able to talk to her and he wanted to learn the language fast. His trick? Sponge Bob, the 28- year-old native of the Ukraine said, referencing the popular Nickelodeon television cartoon. And I have all 10 seasons of Friends on DVD. His methods may have been unconventional, but just five years after moving here, Vykhrest speaks English very well and with surprisingly little accent. Now a dancer with the Columbia (S.C.) Classical Ballet, Vykhrest joins several visiting dancers this weekend for the joint production by the Charleston Ballet and the West Virgini...
* NEW JERSEY BALLET: This traditional production enchants youngsters and grown-ups alike with splendid dancing, a live orchestra, eye-popping special effects and a touch of holiday magic.
THE NUTCRACKER," Ballet West, Capitol Theatre, Dec. 2, additional performances through Dec. 31 (801-355-2787) Back when most of us were still enjoying a late-season swim or a last-hurrah barbecue, hundreds of local children were dedicating their days to learning the festive steps to Tchaikovsky's wintery "Nutcracker Suite." As far as Ballet West was concerned, Christmas began in September.
Every year since 1986, Frank Irvin has taken his daughters Kadence, Juliet and Abigail to see "The Nutcracker." This year, he's looking forward to extending his family tradition by taking the first of his granddaughters to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's production of the Christmas classic. Seeing "The Nutcracker" reflects on holidays past, present and future for Irvin, who lives in Shaler.
