Lafayette County voters will decide on Thursday whether to fund Lafayette Manor, the county-owned skilled nursing facility in Darlington, at an additional $500,000 in 2010, 2011 and 2012, or the put the facility up for sale. It is the only Medicaid/Medicare-certified skilled nursing home in Lafayette County. The facility employs more than 90 people and serves 67 residents. Supporters say there is a moral and social duty to keep it operational. But there is a substantial operational cost. This year, the facility is projecting to be overbudget by more than $158,000. It is anticipated that the county will experience a budget shortfall, beginning in 2010.
ElderWood Senior Care, which is selling most of its assets to a New York City firm, will complete the conversion of its Heathwood facility in Amherst from a nursing home to an assisted-living facility by closing it in about 30 days and reopening it under the new format. The Williamsville-based company said its 160-bed Heathwood skilled nursing facility at 815 Hopkins Road will close and immediately reopen June 23, initially with 90 available beds for assisted-living patients. The facility is not part of the sale.
Niagara County has so far been unable to interest anyone in buying the former county-owned nursing home, and a County Legislature committee last week shelved a request to hire a company to provide information that might improve the site's marketability. Mount View Health Facility closed at the end of 2007, and the county put the property up for sale with an asking price of $6 million.
