  • Cresson Henry Kearny, an author, self-styled "gadgeteer," engineer and geologist who was a direct descendant of Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny, died Dec. 18 in Montrose, Colo., 20 days short of his 90th birthday. Kearny (the family pronounces the surname Carny) was arguably the world's top authority on individual nuclear war survival. Nuclear War Survival, his 1979 guide to building shelters, air pumps and dependable fallout radiation meters, has sold more than 600,000 copies.
