BERLIN - North Korea's closest neighbors responded to the news of leader Kim Jong Il's death by bracing for possible destabilization in the region, while across the globe, other nations expressed cautious optimism that the change of leadership could provide an opportunity to usher in reforms.
North Korea's past erratic behavior made it difficult to predict the course that its newly named leader, Kim's 20-something son Kim Jong Un, would choose during the transition. Japan and South Korea quickly held emergency meetings, while China, a key North Korean ally, pledged continued support.

SEOUL, South Korea (Bloomberg News) -- North Korea told "the world's foolish politicians" to expect no change from the new regime headed by Kim Jong Un and threatened a "sea of fire" for South Korean President Lee Myung Bak's administration.

PYONGYANG, North Korea - North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il's son as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the next leader of the communist nation even as millions continue mourning the father a week after his death.
Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state - this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
