A potential brouhaha over the construction of an emergency helipad at a local hospital appears to have been gently grounded.
The Oklahoma Heart Hospital South Campus at Interstate 240 and Sooner Road has applied to the Oklahoma City Planning Commission for a permit to build a permanent place for air ambulances to land. The commission is scheduled to vote on the permit Thursday. Helicopters have been transporting patients to the hospital since it opened in January 2010, Chief Operating Officer John Austin said. The construction of a helipad simply formalizes the process after its temporary permit phase and gives the helicopters a set-aside place to land, about 20 to 30 feet away from the parking lot where they now set down.

Janice McKay leaned in and spoke softly to her patient under the roaring din of the helicopter blades. // As green fields and gray waters unfolded far below, the nurse eyed the clear liquid in a hanging IV bag and the numbers on a monitor over the stretcher. Her patient was calm and stable.
