Ent Federal Credit Union directors will decide next week whether to bid on the financially troubled Norlarco Credit Union in Fort Collins, an Ent official said Thursday. The National Credit Union Administration, which insures credit union deposits, took over Norlarco in May amid mounting losses from construction loans in Florida. The agency told Norlarco's 43,366 members last month it was seeking buyers for the credit union.

Today's newspapers are filled with dour headlines about bad credit, foreclosures, the weak economy and subprime mortgages. Unfortunately, these headlines have caused many consumers to panic, even in Texas, where many banks are experiencing a record-breaking year. As if the headlines aren't bad enough, now the credit unions are getting in on the action by touting themselves as the "good guys" in local newspaper, radio and television advertising. The negative headlines, bolstered by damaging and incorrect credit union ads, are seen by legislators, who are threatening to introduce bills that could have some very negative consequences for Texas banks.
