HOMEARAMA IS a 16-day, single-site display of fully furnished and fully landscaped custom showcase homes that demonstrate the lat est in home construction, design, furnishings and technological innovations. This is the 29th year it has been staged by Tidewater Builders Association in South Hampton Roads. Nine homes and The Villas at East Beach, luxury condominiums overlooking the adjacent marinas, will be on display. Homes range from 2,000 to 3,000-plus square feet and cost $500,000 and up. Where is it? The event is at East Beach in Norfolk, a coastal neighborhood on the Chesapeake Bay that was launched at the 2004 Homearama. East Beach is a public-private initiative that includes the city of Norfolk, the Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority and East Beach Co. LLC.
The Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority is seeking proposals from developers and development teams to redevelop the former site of Moton Circle apartments into a new, mixed-income neighborhood. Located on the northern edge of the Broad Creek development, the 11-acre site is bordered by Roberts Road to the east, Cary Avenue to the south, the Douglas Park neighborhood and Globe Iron Industries to the west, and an industrial warehouse on the north. The resulting community will include for-sale housing units as well as a mix of market-rate rental units, assisted-rental and possibly low-income housing tax credits units.

The redevelopment of St. Paul's Quadrant got a boost Friday as Norfolk became one of the nation's first recipients of a federal grant aimed at transforming troubled areas. // The city for five years has been working on plans to remake 100 acres just east of downtown into a mixture of affordable and market-rate housing, offices, and stores. The ambitious vision includes tearing down all 618 apartments within the Tidewater Gardens public housing complex. The $250,000 grant will help the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority plan and possibly implement the first round of services aimed at assisting residents in the targeted area and in neighboring Young Terrace. The services will include job training, literacy programs and financial counseling.
FALL HOMEARAMA 2010 marks a return to East Beach, a community on the Chesapeake Bay in Norfolk. When Homearama opened there in 2004, one streetscape of 16 beautiful homes was surrounded by fields of dirt. Today, more than 200 families make their home in this neighborhood, and very little dirt remains. It has since been recognized with numerous awards for its pedestrian-friendly design and remarkable architectural details. It is a successful public- private initiative that includes the city of Norfolk, the Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority and East Beach Co.
