During dreary winter months, houseplants often become a focal point indoors. This is particularly true during the holiday season when poinsettias, Christmas cactus, and amaryllis are in their glory. Another plant that often takes center stage during the holidays is the Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla), which is a perfect tabletop tree for offices, apartments or anywhere space is an issue. Its soft green foliage and graceful, sweeping branches make it an elegant accent. The well-spaced branches of Norfolk Island pines are distinctive for their habit of extending at an almost perfect 90-degree angle from the trunk. Norfolk Island pines are not true pines, but are members of an ancient conifer family. They are native to Norfolk Island, which is located in the South Pacific near...

Pity the poor poinsettia. For years, the cheery holiday plant has been made to play the villain. People have warned their pet-owning friends against having the bright-red plants in the house unless they want to put their pets' lives in danger. People in casual conversation say things like, "Oh, you don't want poinsettias if you have cats.

With Christmas 2011 past history, trees we purchased from Christmas tree lots have long been discarded. Artificial ones have been stored away until next year. Those who purchased live trees have either already planted them outdoors or have stored them in a sheltered place until they can be planted next spring. But there is a small minority of Christmas tree owners who have simply removed the decorations from their trees and they will continue to enjoy them as attractive houseplants until it's time to decorate them again next Christmas.

The Hurricane Hunters fly routinely into Atlantic cyclones, taking measurements that help forecasters predict the strength and path of hurricanes well before landfall. // The idea of deliberately flying into such violent storms dates to the early 1940s, when Army Air Corps officer Joseph Duckworth, on a dare, flew his small trainer into the eye of a hurricane and back out again.

Germantown Animal Shelter employees hope a few plants can help ease the stress dogs experience and create a "home" feel for the hundreds of animals that pass through the shelter doors each year. Dogs are really stressed in shelters. They are surrounded by other dogs, live in an environment they are unfamiliar with and are cared for by strangers. Our plants project is a simple step to help animals adjust," said senior animal control officer Bethany German.

SHE SAID she loved real Christmas trees. She loved going to get them in the freezing tree lot. She loved picking them out and taking them home. She loved the way they smelled. He said what he did every year - that he hated putting them up. Really hated it. He hated the Christmas tree stand. He hated the way the tree was always crooked. He hated the way the entire family held its breath every year to see if the fully decorated tree would fall over. Which it has. After that disaster, they started tying it to the nearby door hinges.
