Have you ever had to cancel a planned trip and lose your nonrefundable plane ticket? Next time, you don't actually have to lose the ticket. In most cases, even if it's nonrefundable, its value - except for any penalties - can be applied toward another ticket, and not necessarily on the same airline.
The first and most important thing you need to do is cancel your original itinerary before your first flight takes off. If you don't, you'll really lose the ticket's value.

I recently booked a flight. It was a nonrefundable ticket, with American and United. Subsequently, I learned that I would meet a colleague in Chicago and that it would be better to drive to our destination from there rather than continuing our flight to Detroit and driving from there.
Knowing the safety concerns these days, I contacted the airline to let them know I would not occupy my seat on that leg of the itinerary, but would use the two flights home.

The unprofitable history of the airline industry raises questions about how effectively airlines price their product. In this study, we use option pricing theory to examine the value of the put option embedded in refundable airline tickets. Specifically, we examine whether the time to expiration of the embedded put option is properly priced. Compiling daily real-time ticket price data for Delta and Southwest over 3.5 months, we find little evidence to suggest that airlines price the value of time in the embedded put option. However, we do find evidence suggesting that options are priced higher on business-dominated routes than on vacation-dominated routes.
