In December 2007, the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly published a report titled, "An Investigation of Fraud in Nonprofit Organizations," cataloguing malfeasance that amounted to billions of dollars each year. In response, the authors advocated certain strategies, including the urging of governing boards to consider important controls in addition to the annual financial statement audit. Effectiveness and productivity may be corporate jargon -- but they're principles at the core...

Roughly half of the advertising revenue is earned by 100 organizations.

Due to a variety of factors, nonprofit organizations have been pressed to adapt their operating style in an effort to continue playing an effective role in society. One of those adaptations - the use of entrepreneurial, businesslike practices - has the potential to create challenges and opportunities for nonprofit organizations. This ethnographic case study of a nonprofit family services organization investigated the use of entrepreneurial management approaches and how the potential tension between mission and market orientation is balanced. The data presented suggest that a mission oriented, traditional management approach and more marketoriented entrepreneurial management can be blended through a "continuum of practice," with the tension resulting from integration as a positive factor...
