  • You're probably scratching your head on the title of this article, but maybe when I explain a little further it will make sense. My name is Ken Krulik, I'm a Raleigh resident these last six years, a Yankee transplant from the Washington, D.C., metro area (anyone ever heard of Bowie, Md.?). Since moving here I've been a volunteer with the Alliance of AIDS Services Carolina (AAS-C), specifically with special events including a little bicycle ride that from 1997 to 2003 started in Raleigh and ended four days later in Washington (one year it was Norfolk to D.C.). • Janet Murguia is only the second person to lead the National Council of La Raza, the 37-year-old agency dedicated to improving the lives of Latinos. Based in Washington, D.C., it encompasses more than 300 non-profit organizations in 41 states. Before taking the job, Murguia was a vice chancellor at the University of Kansas. She was in Waukesha last week and spoke with reporter Georgia Pabst. What are some key issues facing Latinos and on your agenda for the National Council of La Raza?

Its status as a swing state has drawn scrutiny from a variety of political and non- profit organizations. The most recent examination is from the Advancement Project, a civil-rights group based in Washington, D.C.

  • Hugo Cardona had planned to retire to his new apartment in Miami at the end of 2004. As senior vice president for technical assistance and constituency support for the National Council of La Raza Inc., in Washington, D.C., his job was to help La Raza's 300 non-profit affiliate organizations in 37 states.
