Jonathan Wells' Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design (Regnery) is surely the best book ever written on the problems of Darwin's theory of evolution. Since there is no evidence for species changes between the simplest forms of unicellular life, it is not surprising that there is no evidence for evolution ... throughout the whole array of higher multi-cellular organisms.
It is time for those of us who are trained in science and who are legally and morally responsible for evaluating broad spectrums of scientific facts every day to speak out against the biased, evolution-favoring articles that appear in the lay press. I refer to an unfortunate and misleading article, which appeared in the November issue of the National Geographic magazine titled "Was Darwin Wrong? No, the Evidence for Evolution is Overwhelming."The article was written by David Quammen, an excellent writer, but without formal training in science. His academic training at Yale and Oxford was in literature. His graduate work was on William Faulkner. And his answer to his rhetorical question was incorrect.
While not disputing the undeniably important role played by oil rents, Foley suggests that the telecommunications revolution and a series of other reThosealities of the "modern" era have created new forms of politics and governance and spawned in parallel a more enlightened leadership from the familial elites. Foley points to the political evolution in places like Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar as evidence of halting steps towards more representative governments in the region that bear no relationship to the traditional tribal, familial patronage networks of the past.
According to Philip Gold, "Evolution, the best guess of a brilliant 19th-century scientist, has not been wearing well of late" ("The universe, a laboratory designed with us in mind?" Books, April 18). I don't know what Mr. Gold means by "not wearing well," but the percentage of people worldwide with a doctorate in a hard science who accept the key tenets of Darwinian evolution is probably higher than 90 percent. It might be higher than 95 percent. This number probably has increased every 10 years since Darwin published "The Origin of Species" (1859). In a recent poll of science professors in Ohio (conducted by Case Western Reserve and the University of Cincinnati), 93 percent said they were not aware of "any scientifically valid evidence or an alternate scientific theory that challenges...
Charles Lindblom's seminal article, "The Science of 'Muddling Through,'" recognized serious policy-development limitations at the time of its writing. He argued that while root analysis theoretically offered a more rational-comprehensive approach policy analysts lacked the intellectual and computing capacity to accomplish it; whereas, branch analysis, or limited successive comparison, was more reachable. Writing under the name Harun Yahya, Oktar has written a massive, beautifully illustrated and rather troubling book, "Atlas of Creation." This is the kind of book, in size and shape, you might use to press flowers. It weighs about 10 pounds. It's printed on heavy, glossy paper and must have cost a fortune to publish. Setting aside that Oktar has blamed Jews and Freemasons for trying to contaminate Turkish culture, and has written off the Holocaust as an unfortunate typhus epidemic, the book is more than a little on the creepy side.
