Thank goodness Ronald Reagan isn't around to see House Speaker John A. Boehner's determination to smother democracy and block a vote on a strong bill to combat currency manipulation. Mr. Boehner's rationale for killing the measure - which passed the Senate on Oct. 11 with 16 Republican votes and enjoys majority support in his chamber - recalls the kind of appeasing, defeatist diplomatic mindset that the Gipper so thoroughly discredited.
Mr. Boehner's position is no surprise. The Senate bill and its House counterpart grease the skids for imposing tariffs to offset losses inflicted on competitive domestic manufacturers and their employees by artificially cheap currencies such as China's yuan.

The poet speaks of April with its sweet showers but the bitter thought of taxes due tempers the joys of spring's returning warmth - and emotions can run high.
It has been widely reported that General Electric made $14.3 billion worldwide last year; $3.6 billion of that was earned in the U.S. Yet, the company paid nothing in federal corporate income taxes. Is GE getting away with something or is that report playing on our emotions? It is time to review the sometimes complex legal and accounting principles the understanding of which is at least as important as picking on the first line's poetic reference.

Practicality and common sense drive state Rep. Bruce Chandler's bill to protect firefighters in "no man's land" blazes. It's good to see the state House of Representatives agrees, and it would be better to see the Senate go along, too.
The proposal, HB 1506, is similar to the state's medical Good Samaritan Law. Under Chandler's measure, paid or volunteer firefighters would not be liable for civil damages when fighting fires outside their jurisdiction, including unprotected land. They also wouldn't be held liable if they provided emergency care, rescue, assistance or recovery services at the scene of an emergency.

The current Senate bill," said Sheila Chung, of the San Francisco Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition, "does not reflect the immigration reform called for by millions of immigrant communities marching the streets.
Stan Mark, AALDEF director, warned before passage of S 2611 that "the upsurge in the mass movement will redefine this debate well into the elections if Congress passes their so called "compromise" of comprehensive immigration reform." He calls instead for eliminating current laws penalizing lack of legal status, especially employer sanctions. "The political climate of the debate," the AALDEF leader says, "has converted this immigration bill into a Trojan horse into which lawmakers have crammed anti-immigrant and undemocratic policies."
That might in fact be the outcome of ef...
