  • REVIEW A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

  • In January, when Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor was making the press rounds after winning a Golden Globe for his score to the film "The Social Network," the always mercurial industrial music pioneer grabbed the occasion to throw some dirt on the Grammys. The Grammys ...just kind of feel out of touch," Reznor told MTV. "It's not about integrity, or if [the music] is ahead of its time, or if it's taking chances. Aside from that niche of music that I have no interest in -- Black Eyed Peas territory, disposable pop stuff -- there's almost an incentive to go back to making music as adventurous and groundbreaking as you can, because nobody gets a big hit anymore.

  • During his 40-plus years playing guitar locally, Eric Loy -- who performs three nights a week every week -- never had the opportunity to appear at Gilly's. He finally gets that chance when he opens for his friends Mike Brush (drums, vocals), Layne Loxley (keyboards, vocals), Jeanne Harman (flute, guitar, keyboards, vocals), Sam Lambrose (guitar, vocals) and Steve Weihunt (bass, synthesizer, vocals) of the Moody Blues tribute band Days of Future Passed at Gilly's on Friday. (Owner) Jerry (Gil-loti) contacted me out of the blue last year and wanted me to open for Alan Holdsworth, but I was already booked," Loy said. "I've made it a strict policy, even though something good and tempting comes up, I've got scruples and I don't scrap one gig for another.

  • I've seen the Nonet at past jazz festivals and am always struck by how much Nick Moran contributes to the group's stage presence Generally speaking, I find jazz performers to be less charismatic than their rock counterparts (yeah, all that improvisation demands technical attention, whereas the rockers can concentrate on being showy). But Moran is an exception. Standing by his upright bass, he exudes energy and looks like there's no place he'd rather be. Just before 8 o'clock, I headed down to the Wisconsin Union Theater for the evening's headlining event, the David Sánchez Quartet I noticed the absence of the old arcade lights across the hall from the Rathskeller. Maybe it was the beer, but I felt a wave of nostalgia for the campus area's past. The quartet was one of the most singular j...

  • NEW YORK -- There will be more than a little star power in the upcoming Broadway revival of "A Little Night Music," the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury will share top billing in the production which begins preview performances Nov. 24 and opens Dec. 13 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Zeta-Jones will make her Broadway debut in the production, which will be directed by Trevor Nunn. The musical also will feature Alexander Hanson, who appeared in Nunn's recent London production. It's based on the Ingmar Bergman film "Smiles of a Summer Night.

  • The musicals of Stephen Sondheim are not on the list of easy-to- do shows, thanks to the composer's tongue-tripping lyrics and complex compositions. Perhaps the most difficult of the entire Sondheim canon is "A Little Night Music," thanks to its operatic style and understated comedy, though community companies frequently stage revivals, including the current one by the Kentwood Players at the Westchester Playhouse.

  • Known for his elegantly witty lyrics and gorgeous melodies, [Stephen Sondheim] has composed some of Broadway's most famous shows: "Company," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Follies," "A Little Night Music," "Sweeney Todd," "Into The Woods," as well as the lyrics for "West Side Story" and "Gypsy." Frank Rich wrote in The New York Times that Sondheim is "the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American Musical Theatre.

  • Old Mill Middle Schools North and South will be hosting a music ensemble night and silent auction from 6 to 8 p.m. March 10 in the South school's Media Center, 620 Patriot Lane. It will be an opportunity for students participating in the county competition to perform before an audience.

  • It was star night at the Duarte Museum and as telescopes pointed to the sky, another type of star appeared, bringing her young son to view the universe. Karina Nuvo moved to the area seven years ago. She is a star in her own right, after overcoming a debilitating illness which once threatened to dash her dreams.
