Activities of individuals and corporate bodies like the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Nigeria Educational Research Development Council (NERDC), Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN) and so on for the past decade are aimed at simulation of interest in science at all levels of education (Agbomia 1994). While examining the problems one may encounter in such across cultural setting in science (Chemistry) teaching and learning, there might be some issues of linguistic interference and adequate conceptualization of what certain experiences mean in a second or third language being studied due to cultural differences between the learner and the native speaker of the target language. Over the past several decades, Nigerians have sought to build a stable multiethnic nation. However, nation building has been complicated by Nigeria 's tremendous ethnic diversity and uneven distribution of resources. Taking into account the mandate, institutional arrangements, and conduct of successive governments in Nigeria, this paper identifies four approaches to nation building. These are: the authoritarian, inclusionary, exclusionary, and democratic approaches. The paper examines the limitations of each of these approaches and points to the notable absence of the democratic approach, which is crucial for the promotion of a stable multiethnic nation. In particular, the analysis centers on the application of the Federal Character principle, boundary adjustment policies, and revenue a...

ABUJA, Nigeria - Nigeria detained and released several radical Muslims suspected of being terrorists in 2007 - including a man who officials now say helped organize last week's deadly car bombing at the United Nations headquarters in the nation's capital, a high- ranking official told The Associated Press.
The men arrested four years ago had allegedly been caught with explosives. Their rapid release from detention was apparently aimed at placating Muslim groups, but it has now come back to haunt security officials who fear a growing wave of al-Qaida-linked terror attacks in Nigeria, a main supplier of oil to the United States.

LAGOS, Nigeria - Terror attacks across Nigeria by a radical Muslim sect killed at least 39 people Sunday, with the majority dying on the steps of a Catholic church after celebrating Christmas Mass as blood pooled in dust from a massive explosion.
Authorities acknowledged they could not bring enough emergency medical personnel to care for the wounded outside St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. Elsewhere, a bomb exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast as part of an apparently coordinated assault by the sect known as Boko Haram.

Nigeria's most recent presidential election demonstrated the country's fractious political situation and widespread lack of transparency. Throughout much of its post-independence history, Nigeria has suffered under a three-way geo-ethnic political divide that has helped breed corruption, a heavy dependence on oil, and a lack of economic development. President Umaru Yar'Adua has inherited this system. It will be his responsibility to increase accountability at all levels of government and continue economic reforms to encourage sustainable, broad-based development. The government has implemented numerous long-term financial reforms to ensure banks' sustainability and transparency, and it appears that President Yar'Adua will continue down the correct path. Yet, because of the nature of lon...
