ORLANDO, Fla. - I consider myself something of a hardened, jaded reporter. I was gassed during the raid to seize Elian Gonzalez. I spent weeks watching officials look for hanging chads during the 2000 presidential recount. I've seen more gruesome autopsy photos than the combined CSI casts.
But my latest self-imposed assignment had my friends and colleagues expressing concern for my mental and physical well-being - a weeklong vacation at the just-opened Orlando hotel themed on Nickelodeon, the children's cable television network famous for dropping neon-green slime on game show winners and guests.

In June, the Pardo family returned to the Nickelodeon Hotel for another fun visit. We had fun on all the waterslides and getting slimed at the pool. Here we are pictured with one of our favorite characters, Squidward.
Tip: Purchase rain ponchos before you visit the parks. We had to pay more than $30 for four ponchos (and then saw them at Walmart the next day for 87 cents each).

There is no doubt that The Broward Times can talk the talk, but this past week we also walked the walk. Our Foundation took a group of young black men from Broward County and created experiences that we hope left an impression. We started with a full day on both the high and low ropes challenge course, a fun activity that helped the young men bond, and then it was off to Orlando. We were accommodated at in the Nickelodeon Suites, a dynamic themed hotel, where the young men participated in a myriad of fun-filled activities. In an effort to enrich their lives with positive experiences the foundation hosted keynote speakers such as James Amps III, who talked to the boys about their aspirations and how to achieve their goals.

Wish kid Gregory got his dream come true Sept. 21 when he received his wish to attend Disney World and stay at the Nickelodeon Hotel. Gregory learned that his wish to go to Disney World came true by wish sponsor Shelby County Metro's Bartlett Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 35.
The wish included the family's arrival at the Bartlett Branch Library for a special book reading and acting class, since Gregory wants to be an actor. The story was about super heroes and told about a little boy who enlisted the help of Spider-Man (his favorite character) to find Mr. McSlime. As the adventure unfolded, Gregory found out his wish had been granted.

By the 1940s, two of Coney's three Golden Age amusement parks, Dreamland and Luna Park, had succumbed to fire; Robert Moses, the city's great redeveloper who never hesitated to remake a neighborhood with a sweep of his hand, replaced them with the New York Aquarium and the Luna Park Houses. Even now, the tattooed hipsters who visit Sideshows by the Seashore or the annual Mermaid Parade are still far outnumbered by the throngs of mostly working-class families who descend on Coney Island every summer for the same reasons they always have: sand, sun, and entertainment, all for the price of a subway ride and a fistful of game tokens.
