Jenny Taubman has resigned from the board of the museum named after herself and her husband. She's spent a decade helping to raise funds for the Taubman Museum of Art and, with husband Nick Taubman, donating the largest portion of the funds that made the $66 million museum a reality.
Roanoke's arts and cultural nonprofits received a surprise gift Thursday -- a $2.5 million grant program to help them pay off debts and stabilize their operations. The grant was created by Nick and Jenny Taubman, who gave the largest single donation toward the construction of their namesake, the Taubman Museum of Art.
Last week, Roanoke arts benefactors Nick and Jenny Taubman threw a $2.5 million lifeline to the region's struggling arts and cultural organizations. Spread over two years and divvied up into grants of, at most, $100,000, the gifts are not endowments to assure the long-term health of the Roanoke Valley's cultural treasures. The funds are more in the nature of challenge grants to the community.
Last month, 18 nonprofit arts organizations learned they will share $1.25 million in grants awarded by philanthropists Nick and Jenny Taubman. The awards of as much as $100,000 apiece will go far in enlivening Roanoke's arts community. That there are still so many vibrant, lively organizations to fund is a testament to the ingenuity, persistence and skills of those who pour their talents into each, and to a community that supports the arts through both its tax dollars and attendance.
Correction Nick Taubman, namesake of the Taubman Museum of Art, is not the founder of Advance Auto Parts. His father, Arthur Taubman, was. A story in Wednesday's Virginia section was incorrect on that point.
Three years after its grand opening, Roanoke's Taubman Museum of Art still doesn't earn enough in revenue to cover its operating expenses.
