Two weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on Aug 29, more than 60 bulletin boards had been set up to help locate missing people. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's FEMA.gov listed more than 20 of them, including sites run by the Red Cross, the US Coast Guard, the National center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Salvation Army and the National Next of Kin Registry. Here, Palser criticizes the well-intentioned but chaotic and poorly executed online effort to reunite the hurricane's victims.

Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems' Center for Emergency Preparedness will send a team of medical relief workers to the Gulf Coast region. The Maine Emergency Management Agency requested Sunday that 20 certified nurse's assistants be prepared to leave within 24 hours for a nine-day deployment to a hospital in Thibodeaux, La. The volunteers will be provided housing and three meals a day in a secure facility without power. For nearly two weeks, EMHS has been compiling a list of medical volunteers from throughout the region and has between 50 and 100 prepared to deploy. The volunteers have been assisted with collecting documentation of immunizations, medical and survival supplies, food and water, and other supplies.
