With the arrival today of "The Messenger," we now have an Iraq War home-front drama that's a worthy companion piece to Kathryn Bigelow's superb occupation actioner, "The Hurt Locker," which played in Memphis for two months last year, and arrived on DVD last week.

LONG BEACH -- A 29-year-old Long Beach man shot by police Friday night died at the scene, police announced Saturday.
The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, and the investigation is ongoing, Long Beach Police Department spokesman Sgt. Rico Fernandez said in a news release.

A 33-year-old Hopewell man was killed early Monday when his car struck a tractor-trailer in Somerset County.
State police did not identify the driver yesterday, pending notification of next of kin.

An unidentified driver was killed in Somerset Saturday morning when the vehicle the victim was driving was hit by a train, Somerset police said.
Information on the identity and gender of the victim was not released by Somerset police last night, pending notification of next of kin. Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller could not be reached for comment.

POMONA - A couple was killed Wednesday after their car collided with a tractor trailer on the eastbound 10 Freeway at the 71 Freeway.

One person died Tuesday morning when a vehicle he was in rolled over at Fort Carson's Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site.
The man, a civilian, was one of two people in the vehicle when it crashed, said Randy Tisor, a Fort Carson spokesman. The person's name was not released, pending notification of next of kin.
