This study compares Google News to LexisNexis for finding stories in the New York Times, eight large-circulation U.S. newspapers, and all English-language news outlets in each database. Inter-database agreement between Google News and LexisNexis ranged from 29% to 83%, with much of the discrepancy due to wire service exclusions: LexisNexis missed half or more of stories appearing in major papers and in broad searches of English-language news because it is blind to wire stories. Wire-service blind spots in news archives can be a substantial limitation.

It's welcome news that the National Park Service has reached an agreement with landowners in southwestern Pennsylvania to build a memorial to Flight 93. Prolonged negotiations had threatened the government's timetable to complete the memorial in time for the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 in 2011. The heroic acts of the 40 passengers and crew aboard United Flight 93 deserve a permanent tribute.
The plane was en route from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when four terrorists hijacked it. They intended to crash the jet into a target in Washington, but passengers fought back and tried to take control of the plane. Their struggle ended when the hijackers crashed the jet into a field near Shanksville, Pa.
