Being graced with a wave from the Dalai Lama leaves you feeling spiritually giddy, a group of local Catholics discovered after traveling to Indiana this week to attend an interfaith service with the Buddhist leader in Bloomington, Ind.
After the five-and-a-half-hour drive back to Columbia, the 20 travelers and the Rev. Thomas Saucier arrived at the St. Thomas More Newman Center Tuesday night with the traditional gift of a white linen scarf blessed by the Dalai Lama. It will soon hold a place of honor in the Catholic center on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.

After a year of construction and remodeling, the Newman Center at the University of Utah has now overcome its two largest shortcomings -- insufficient parking and a too-small chapel.

NORMAL -- The St. Robert Bellarmine Newman Center might be moving from its Main Street location that has served Catholic students attending college in the Twin Cities for almost 50 years.
Officials of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria haven't decided whether to renovate the 1967 structure at 501 S. Main St. in Normal or relocate the center to another site near the Illinois State University campus, said John Gibson, director of development and stewardship for the diocese.

Irish-born poet Eamon Grennan has spent as much time in America as he has in his native land. After graduating from University College, Dublin, in the 1960s, he earned his doctorate in English from Harvard and was a faculty member at Vassar College for 30 years. But it was on visits to Ireland that he began writing poetry and Gaelic poetry has been a strong influence. Former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins is one of his admirers, declaring, "Few poets are as generous in the sheer volume of delight his poems convey."
