KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Smith Electric Vehicles Corp. (Smith), a leader in all-electric commercial vehicles, today announced that the company will expand its U.S. operations by adding a manufacturing facility in New York State, creating up to 100 new direct local jobs. Smith will manufacture the zero-emission Newton(TM), its all-electric medium duty vehicle with a range of up to 150 miles and an average annual operating cost that is one-third to one-half that of conventional diesel trucks with comparable gross vehicle weights (GVWs), at the new facility beginning in 2012. A package of city and state incentives of approximately $11 million will augment Smith's private investment.

As small- and large-scale wind energy investment show signs of slowing nationally, a state grant program seeks to keep the small- scale wind energy movement alive in New York State.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's 4- month-old grant program has received at least 17 applications seeking more than $712,000, an average of more than $41,000 each. All the grants, which usually cover about one-third of the purchase and installation of a wind turbine, would go to farms and homes.

Nine New York state agencies and authorities that provide funding for economic development projects are having their applications consolidated under a new effort by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Under the new process, $1 billion in resources will be made available to the 10 regional economic development councils created by Cuomo, which will compete for it. Councils looking to access that money will need to submit only one application to be eligible for any funding provided by the Empire State Development Corp., New York State Canal Corp., New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Department of Labor, Department of State and several other entities. In the past, applicants would have to provide separate applications for each funding source.
