  • The New York State Bar Association is concerned a national focus on literacy and math may lead to a drop in standards for civics education. President Vincent E. Doyle III on Wednesday called on state education officials to continue to foster the state's nationally acclaimed social studies programs. His plea came a day after the National Assessment of Educational Progress, in figures released by the National Center for Education Statistics, found only 12 percent of high school seniors tested are proficient in American history and only 9 percent of fourth-graders, after being shown a picture of President Abraham Lincoln, could provide two reasons why he was important.

  • Motivated by the economic beating of the last few years and concern among its members about the direction of the legal profession, the New York State Bar Association has convened a task force to produce concrete recommendations to improve the profession in four specific areas. Many people are unhappy with the state of the profession - our clients, young lawyers and experienced lawyers. In my mind, we could either keep going on our merry way and hope the economy takes care of [us], or try to do something about it," said bar president Stephen Younger.

  • Law firms that do not keep pace with changing demands in the marketplace will have difficulty competing, according to a new report adopted and released by the New York State Bar Association. The "Report on the Task Force on the Future of the Legal Profession" recommends the restructuring of law firms in the areas of billing practices, work-life balance, training for new attorneys and technology. In the wake of some of the worst economic years in recently memory, the state bar association convened the task force, made up of law firm managing partners, law school professors and deans, technology experts and work-life balance consultants, last June.

  • The New York State Bar Association marked its 135th anniversary Monday. It was at "3-and-1/2 o'clock p.m." on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 1876, that the association first came together in the Assembly chamber of the old state Capitol in Albany. Its founding members were a group of dedicated professionals who shared the goal of using the legal system to improve the lives of New Yorkers.

  • The New York State Bar Association will receive a 2011 American Bar Association Grassroots Advocacy Award for its successful efforts in rallying more than 50 state and local bar associations in opposition to recent federal measures that would have imposed unnecessary regulations on law practices. The NYSBA played a critical role last year in the legislative victory that exempted lawyers from the Federal Trade Commission's Red Flags Rule, which requires creditors to develop programs that identify, detect and respond to the warning signs of identity theft. The rule would have imposed costly, burdensome measures on lawyers, doctors, small businesses and other professionals who do not serve as creditors.

  • Nancy Dillman Peck was honored posthumously Tuesday with the New York State Bar Association's Kay Crawford Murray Award for her lifetime of pioneering work in advancing women in the legal profession. Sponsored by the state bar's Committee on Women in the Law, the award honors an attorney who works to enhance diversity in the legal profession and whose efforts have advanced the professional development of women attorneys. The award was presented to her husband Robert A. Feldman at an awards lunch during the state bar's annual meeting at the Hilton New York in Manhattan.
