  • New York's attorney general has launched an inquiry into whether the National Football League lockout violates the state's antitrust law. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman appears to be the first attorney general from any state to wade into the dispute between NFL owners and players. He says he's acting on behalf of New York's many businesses and workers whose incomes are threatened by the loss of games and the idling of upstate training camps conducted by the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants and New York Jets.

  • New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan would probably tell Thomas DiBartolomeo to just suck it up. But DiBartolomeo is going to sue instead. October 1, 2006, was a black day for Jets fans. Peyton Manning engineered a last-minute drive in Meadowlands Stadium to put the Indianapolis Colts ahead 31-28.

  • Bears sign WR Williams, DL Gholston BOURBONNAIS, Ill -- Quarterback Jay Cutler has a new target and Roy Williams has a chance to redeem himself. The former Pro Bowl receiver will try to re-energize his career in a system he knows well after signing a one- year deal with Chicago on Friday, one of several big moves by the Bears. They also re-signed re-signed defensive tackle Anthony Adams and linebacker Nick Roach to two-year contracts, agreed to a one- year deal with former New York Jets defensive lineman Vernon Gholston and came to terms with their remaining unsigned draft picks. Veteran free-agent center Olin Kreutz's status remained up in the air, but running back Matt Forte decided to show up for camp rather than hold out for a new contract. • The New York Jets manhandled Indianapolis' Peyton Manning and New England's Tom Brady on the road in the playoffs the last two years. They were not about to be intimidated Sunday against a hot Buffalo offense in a hostile stadium full of white-clad, pom-pom waving Bills fans.

  • New York Jets coach Rex Ryan called blitzes against Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning 63 percent of the time in an AFC Championship Game loss last year. During the Jets' playoff rematch two weeks ago, he called for his defense to blitz 15 percent of the time. The Jets won. In the New England Patriots' 45-3 shellacking of the Jets in early December, Ryan called 22 blitzes, and Tom Brady responded by throwing three touchdowns. Last week the Jets scaled back to 16 blitzes, and Brady was ineffective, throwing for only 91 yards when the Jets sent extra rushers in a 28-21 New York victory.

  • You have to question at this point how much a team can take, how many times the Buffalo Bills can forget the final two drives and invigorate themselves by Sunday. Resilience is one thing, but this is something else. The world the Bills inhabit at the moment is one of would-be touchdown passes dropped, blown coverages, blitzes that brought little pressure and a 28-24 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

  • Six of the National Football League's seven unbeaten teams get road-tested in a full schedule of games for Week Three. The only unbeaten playing at home will be the Buffalo Bills, who face the unbeaten New England Patriots today at Ralph Wilson Stadium in what should be the most interesting game of the day. As for the other unbeatens, we'll find out a lot more about the worthiness of the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins.
