A coalition of business groups has urged the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to reconsider requiring power plants to upgrade cooling units, a measure that could prove costly to the providers.
The New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance, a coalition of labor groups, asked the DEC to revise a policy it proposed in March which would require the construction of cooling towers at many generators, including the former LILCO plants now operated by National Grid.

Two formerly contaminated brownfields in Rochester are officially cleaned up and poised for redevelopment, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis announced Wednesday.
The sites along Gregory Street and Mount Hope Avenue are the latest clean-ups to be completed under the state's Brownfield Cleanup Program, Grannis said.
