WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- George W. A nonpartisan campaign to get young people to vote has registered more than 5,200 Mainers from 18 to 24 years old, most of them as independents, the New Voters Project announced Wednes- day. Now the group is trying to get young voters to cast absentee ballots or turn out at the polls Nov. 2. The New Voters Project will use e-mail reminders, phone banks, ride offers and other tools to ensure that newly enrolled voters actually participate in the election.
Secretary of State Dan Gwadosky, who hosted Wednesday's news conference, said the issues are too important for young people to sit out the election. Gwadosky predicted that Maine is about to reclaim its No. 1 ranking for voter turnout in a presidential year, after slipping to the No. 2 slot behind Minnesota in 2000.

The Hispanic Institute's Latino Voter Registration Project successfully has added 10,000 new Hispanic voters to the rolls in Nevada, they say, accomplished through door- to-door campaigns and cooperation from local and national Hispanic media.
